How much does a barndominium cost?

The cost of building a fully furnished barndominium varies by location but usually costs between $100 and $150 per square foot, which includes supplies and labor. That equates to $200,000 – $350,000 for a 2,000-square-foot home. The wide range in cost is due primarily to the interior finish options of the home. The metal structure of a barndominium is quite affordable and often allows families to consider designing a more luxurious interior than they would with a traditional style home. 

The Bare-Bones Approach

If you are a DIYer and have experience in construction, you might consider having D & J Construction build the shell for your barndominium but finish the interior yourself. This option is only recommended for those familiar with building codes and regulations and who have experience in home construction.   • Easy to Insulate – Barndominiums have wall studs every 8-10 feet, making fewer bridges between your insulation.
  • Fast Construction – Site preparation for barndominiums is much faster than traditional homes.
  • Open Floor Plan – By using poles to support the load of the structure, barndominiums do not require vertical support beams running through the middle of the structure. This provides a more customizable and open floor plan.

  • City Restrictions – Some cities do not allow for the construction of residential barndominiums.
  • Corrosion – Similar to traditional homes, bardominiums will experience corrosion over time. However, the metal siding on a bardominium is usually easy to replace. 
  • Financing – Some banks do not provide financing for barndominiums.  
  • Smaller Resale Market – Barndominiums are a niche market and can be harder to sell than traditional homes. 
  • Soundproofing – Barndominiums are typically not as soundproof as traditional homes. However, this can be resolved by constructing your barndominium with proper soundproofing insulation.
